Play The Game

This is my first ever of what I'd call a "drum study". That is, I've attempted to write a song focused almost exclusively on the drums and how they carry the song.

It turns out that drums are hard to compose with. They don't really stand on their own, at least not in the way that a guitar or piano might. They're more like the substrate on which a song is built.

Drums provide a frame of reference and add flavor that makes a song work. But by themselves, drums do not create direction. They may tell you how to march, but they don't tell you where you're going. Maybe that's what drums bring to the table. It's not about getting there, but being where you are, and resonating with other people.

There is an unmistakable Sega Genesis vibe in on this song. Maybe it's just the FM bass talking, but this is another one where I couldn't help but write a song for a video game.

If this was a game, I'd definitely play it.
