If you were to ask me why I made this song, I'm not sure I could answer you.
After about two minutes of noodling on the INTEGRA and I
found the SEQ 20 patch in the SN Synth presets. It's quirky and comes with a
nice tap delay that's synced to MIDI clock. As a result, it's hard to play even
one note without being pulled into a rhythmic pulsating groove. And really,
isn't that what delay is good for?
I was happy with how quickly this song came together. I couldn't have spent more
than an hour writing it in total. I spent more time adjusting the mix, trying to
keep the tinny SEQ 20 patch from being crowded out by the bass and drums.
It's not the most complex track I've ever done, but the dewy synth vibe is new for me. It recalls an era that I didn't grow up in and never knew, but it feels warm and fuzzy anyway.
When I was very young, I had a simple palette, and I wasn't in a hurry to change that. Macaroni and cheese was easy to prepare, easy to eat, and made me happy. As a result, it found its way onto my plate quite frequently. When I was older, I began to realize how much of my life had happened around this dish. I had eaten it with family and friends, parents and grandparents, in restaurants and at home, at gatherings and parties, on holidays and on Wednesday.
Macaroni and cheese can be simple or complex, heavy or light, and even spicy or plain. But more importantly, through all eras of my life, macaroni and cheese has just been there. It's been a small token of love and care that has brought comfort, familiarity, and connection whenever it has been served.
I wish more things in life were like mac 'n' cheese.
